          Abstract

          Culmos de la especie de bambú guadua (Guadua angustifolia Kunth), obtenidos de bosques naturales dominados por esta especie y localizados en dos sitios con condiciones ecológicas diferentes fueron evaluados para determinar cambios en sus propiedades físico-mecánicas y en el contenido de lignina. Las probetas evaluadas fueron tomadas de culmos en diferentes estados de madurez, cuya edad oscilaba entre uno y cinco años. Dentro de cada sitio, los valores de las propiedades evaluadas tienden a ser más altos en edades mayores, pero no siempre estas diferencias fueron significativas (p>0.05). Aquellos culmos que provenían del sitio localizado a menor altitud, más cálido y más seco mostraron valores significativamente mayores (p<0.05) para las variables evaluadas. Con base en los resultados obtenidos, se debe considerar que, aunque la madurez de los culmos es relevante para la definición de propiedades físico-mecánicas y lignina, las condiciones de sitio representan cambios que deben ser considerados cuando se quiere hacer una selección de los mismos y de ciertos atributos que son requeridos en el mercado.

          Translated abstract

          From two natural bamboo stands dominated by the bamboo species guadua (Guadua angustifolia Kunth) located in sites with different ecological conditions, culms were assessed in order to elucidate possible changes in physical- mechanical properties and lignin content as well. Test pieces were collected from the two sites and were obtained from guadua culms with ages between 1 and 5 years. Among sites the values obtained of physical-mechanical properties and lignin content tend to increase with culms age; however, these changes were not always significantly different (p>0.05). Those culms from the warmer and drier site located at lower altitude showed on average values significantly (p<0.05) higher of the variables assessed. Considering the results obtained, culm maturity is an important factor influencing both physical-mechanical properties and lignin content, however ecological conditions determine larger differences in these variables to be considered for selecting bamboo culms when specific attributes are required by the market.

            Estimation of water retention and availability in soils of Rio Grande do Sul

            Dispersed information on water retention and availability in soils may be compiled in databases to generate pedotransfer functions. The objectives of this study were: to generate pedotransfer functions to estimate soil water retention based on easily measurable soil properties; to evaluate the efficiency of existing pedotransfer functions for different geographical regions for the estimation of water retention in soils of Rio Grande do Sul (RS); and to estimate plant-available water capacity based on soil particle-size distribution. Two databases were set up for soil properties, including water retention: one based on literature data (725 entries) and the other with soil data from an irrigation scheduling and management system (239 entries). From the literature database, pedotransfer functions were generated, nine pedofunctions available in the literature were evaluated and the plant-available water capacity was calculated. The coefficient of determination of some pedotransfer functions ranged from 0.56 to 0.66. Pedotransfer functions generated based on soils from other regions were not appropriate for estimating the water retention for RS soils. The plant-available water content varied with soil texture classes, from 0.089 kg kg-1 for the sand class to 0.191 kg kg-1 for the silty clay class. These variations were more related to sand and silt than to clay content. The soils with a greater silt/clay ratio, which were less weathered and with a greater quantity of smectite clay minerals, had high water retention and plant-available water capacity.

              INFLUENCE OF AGE AND HEIGHT POSITION ON COLOMBIAN GUADUA ANGUSTIFOLIA BAMBOO MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

              The age of bamboo is a key factor that affects its mechanical properties. Bamboo Guadua angustifolia kunt (Guadua a.k.) has been used as a construction material in America, but the influence of the age and height position of the culm on the mechanical properties has not been studied in detail. In this study, selected mechanical properties of Guadua a.k from 2 to 5 year old culms, located at different heights, were investigated using international standard test procedures (ISO 22157). Based on the experimental results, it was found that the top portion (sobrebasa) showed the maximum strength and modulus of elasticity compared to the other portions, since this portion of bamboo has higher density. More over, density of Guadua a.k. culm has more influence in modulus of rupture in bending, than in any of the other studied mechanical properties. Regardless of the culm height, it seems that the mature age of Guadua angustifolia kunt is reached between 3 and 4 years old, because the mechanical properties at those ages were the highest and remained almost constant, whereas the mechanical properties of the culms at the age of 5 were the lowest.
