          Abstract

Abstract Background and objective. Writing and publishing scientific manuscripts is one of the most important components of academic practice and represents the culmination of a scientific activity. We conduct an statistical review of publications of plastic surgeons and residents from Argentina during the last 10 years. Methods. A review in PubMed, LILACS, MEDES and SciELO databases was carried on to evaluate all articles with at least one plastic surgeon or resident from Argentina as an author between 2010 and 2020. The following data was collected: journal and year of publication, author´s affiliation, authorship order, theme, resident participation and their order of appearance. Results. A total of 247 articles were selected, 65% were published in English based journals and 35% in Spanish language journals. The Revista Argentina de Cirugía Plástica had the highest number of publications in Spanish journals whereas Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal and the Journal of Craneofacial Sugery had the highest number in English journals. There was a mean of 22.5 publications per year and 20.2% of articles had resident participation. Conclusions. Although the number of publications has remained constant during this period, an upward trend is observed in English-speaking articles. The participation of residents in the articles is low and raises the need to include research programs in the residency curriculum.

Integrated Plastic Surgery Applicant Review: Important Factors and Selection Criteria

Summary: Matching into integrated plastic surgery residency is highly competitive. Applicants to these programs are among the most accomplished graduating medical students, consistently demonstrating some of the highest United States Medical Licensing Examination scores, mean numbers of research publications, and rates of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society membership. The applicant review process requires programs to rely on a number of objective and subjective factors to determine which of these qualified applicants have the most potential for success. We outline these factors, discuss their correlation with resident performance, and provide our institution’s applicant review process both for applicants hoping to optimize their applications for success in the National Resident Matching Program and for program faculty hoping to optimize their resident selection process.

Applying to Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Programs: Trends in the Past 5 Years of the Match.

The average integrated plastic surgery applicant spends over $6000 for interviews. The average program director reviews over 200 applications per cycle. It is important to make the application process efficient and cost effective for both applicants and programs. The authors analyzed recent trends and the literature in an attempt to increase the likelihood that applicants match, suggest means of reducing applicants' costs, and improve the process.
