Abstract

El Área Protegida Lomas de Arena está ubicada a pocos kilómetros del centro de la ciudad de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, y presenta una gran importancia hidrológica y ecoturística. Un equipo de investigadores ha estudiado los cambios en la cobertura de la tierra, la dinámica hídrica y la magnitud del movimiento de las dunas de arena que existen en la zona, con el objetivo de diseñar el que es actualmente el primer sistema de monitoreo computarizado para la administración de áreas protegidas.

The Lomas de Arena Protected Area is a few kilometres outside the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra and is very important in terms of water resources and ecotourism. A team of researchers has studied changes in the vegetation cover, water dynamics and the extent of movement of the sand dunes found in the area, for the purpose of designing what is now the first computerized monitoring system for the management of protected areas.
