          Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study sought to describe the transgender identity construction process from the perspective of transgender adolescents. The aim was to visualize their needs and difficulties during the process, since there is evidence showing that they are a vulnerable group in terms of mental health. A multiple case exploratory study was conducted using qualitative methodology. Participants were 8 purposively selected Chilean teenagers residing in Santiago, Chile, aged between 15 and 19 years, who had revealed their gender identity to their parents and were receiving support from mental health specialists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and were analyzed using the grounded theory method. Results revealed a trajectory that begins in early childhood with an affinity for and an interest in the activities of the gender not assigned at birth, with family and/or peers displaying reluctance/rejection. This process is associated with contradictory feelings and emotional tension, which compels adolescents to search for information in their sociocultural context in order to name and make sense of what they are experiencing. Afterward, they become able to share their gender identity with those closest to them and begin considering subsequent social changes.

Family acceptance in adolescence and the health of LGBT young adults.

the role of family acceptance as a protective factor for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adolescents and young adults has not been established. a quantitative measure with items derived from prior qualitative work retrospectively assessed family accepting behaviors in response to LGBT adolescents' sexual orientation and gender expression and their relationship to mental health, substance abuse, and sexual risk in young adults (N= 245). family acceptance predicts greater self-esteem, social support, and general health status; it also protects against depression, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation and behaviors. family acceptance of LGBT adolescents is associated with positive young adult mental and physical health. Interventions that promote parental and caregiver acceptance of LGBT adolescents are needed to reduce health disparities.

              Enhancing transgender health care.

               E Lombardi (2001)
As awareness of transgender men and women grows among health care educators, researchers, policymakers, and clinicians of all types, the need to create more inclusive settings also grows. Greater sensitivity and relevant information and services are required in dealing with transgender men and women. These individuals need their identities to be recognized as authentic, they need better access to health care resources, and they need education and prevention material appropriate to their experience. In addition, a need exists for activities designed to enhance understanding of transgender health issues and to spur innovation.
