      Review on the Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Malaysian Clams

          Abstract

          The current review discusses the levels of six heavy metals in different clam species from 34 sites of Malaysian coasts. The concentrations ( µg/g dry weight) of these heavy metals ranged around 0.18–8.51, 0.13–17.20, 2.17–7.80, 0.84–36.00, 24.13–368.00, and 177.82–1912.00 for Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Fe, respectively. It was observed that the concentrations of metals slightly depend on different clam species but mostly depend on site locations. According to Malaysian Food Regulation (1985), about 30% and more than 50% sites are safe from Cd and Pb contamination, respectively, and also the clam species from the other populations studied were safe for consumption.

          Study on heavy metals levels and its risk assessment in some edible fishes from Bangshi River, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

          Concentrations of eight heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn, and As) in the muscles of ten species of fish collected from Bangshi River at Savar in Bangladesh were measured in two different seasons. The concentrations of the studied heavy metals, except Pb in Corica soborna, were found to be below the safe limits suggested by various authorities and thus gave no indication of pollution. The present study also showed that, Zn was the most and Cd was the least accumulated metal in the studied fish muscles. ANOVA analysis clearly revealed that there was a significant variation (CI=95%) of the heavy metal concentrations in different fish species in the Bangshi River. Significant positive correlations between the heavy metal concentrations in fish muscles were also observed in both seasons. From the human health point of view, this study showed that there was no possible health risk to consumers due to intake of studied fishes under the current consumption rate.

            Dietary exposure to trace elements and health risk assessment in the 2nd French Total Diet Study.

            Dietary exposure of the French population to trace elements has been assessed in the second national Total Diet Study (TDS). Food samples (n = 1319) were collected between 2007 and 2009 to be representative of the whole diet of the population, prepared as consumed, and analyzed. Occurrence data were combined with national individual consumption data to estimate dietary exposure for adults and children mean and high consumers. Compared to the 1st French TDS performed in 2000-2004, exposure is higher for cadmium, aluminium, antimony, nickel, cobalt and lower for lead, mercury and arsenic. For aluminium, methylmercury, cadmium, lead and inorganic arsenic risk cannot be ruled out for certain consumer groups. It still appears necessary to continue undertaking efforts to reduce exposure to these elements. Due to the lack of robust toxicological data and/or speciation analysis in food on chromium, tin, silver and vanadium to perform a risk assessment, data on occurrence and dietary exposure are provided as Supplementary material. In order to minimize nutritional and chemical risks, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) reiterates its recommendation for a diversified diet (food items and origins).
