          Abstract

Abstract Introduction: The oncology nurse practitioner is trained with knowledge about cancer, treatment modalities, patient care scenarios. The risk to exposure resulting from handling cytostatics can affect the health of healthcare workers. Objective: to describe the biosafety measures for handling cytostatics and the clinical signs and symptoms resulting from exposure to these drugs in the nursing staff of a private health care institution in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. Methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, retrospective study was carried out. The sample consisted of 31 nursing professionals. The data collection instrument used was the one proposed by Villa and Varela-Díaz (2020), which records sociodemographic, occupational, health and biosafety measures data. Results: The sample was 74.2% female, the average age was 37.67±6.79, 58.1% had a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, with an average experience in oncology of 4.06±4.09. Of the participants, 96.8% administered cytostatics and 51.6% were involved in disposal. The main symptoms reported were headache and abdominal pain with 64.5% and 45.2% respectively. 41.9% referred to paraclinical examinations and control by the institution. Conclusions: Nursing personnel are exposed to high occupational risks when dealing with cytostatics. Compliance with protocols for handling and disposal is required in order to raise patient safety and occupational safety standards.

Genotoxicity assessment in oncology nurses handling anti-neoplastic drugs.

Many anti-neoplastic drugs are used globally during chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer. However, occupational exposure to anti-cancer drugs can represent a potential health risk to humans. Investigations on the genotoxicity of these drugs are inconsistent. Further, information on the genotoxic potential of anti-neoplastic drugs in medical personnel from India is not available. Hence, the aim of this study was to carry out genotoxicity monitoring of nurses from the oncology department of a hospital in South India, occupationally exposed to anti-neoplastic drugs under routine working conditions. The level of genome damage was determined in whole blood with the comet assay as well as micronucleus test (MNT) and in buccal epithelial cells with MNT alone of 60 nurses handling anti-neoplastic drugs and 60 referents matched for age and sex. Urinary cyclophosphamide (CP), used as a marker for drug absorption, was also measured in the urine of the nurses. The DNA damage observed in the lymphocytes of exposed nurses was significantly higher than the controls. Similarly, a significant increase in micronuclei (MN) frequency with peripheral blood lymphocytes and buccal cells was observed in the exposed nurses compared to controls (P < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed that occupational exposure and age had a significant effect on mean comet tail length as well as on frequency of MN. The mean value of CP in urine of the nurses handling anti-neoplastic drugs was (mean +/- standard deviation; 0.44 +/- 0.26 microg/ml). Our study has shown that increased genetic damage was evident in nurses due to occupational exposure to anti-neoplastics. This data corroborate the need to maintain safety measures to avoid exposure and the necessity of intervention in the case of exposure when using and handling anti-neoplastic drugs.

Work practice and some adverse health effects in nurses handling antineoplastic drugs.

Widespread use of antineoplastic drugs has led to higher health risks of personnel who prepare and administer these drugs. The short-term, non-specific health effects in nurses handling antineoplastic drugs (AND) have been documented.

Nursing professionalism: a national survey of professionalism among Japanese nurses.

The aim of this study was to quantify the professionalism of nurses in Japan. The Japanese version of the Behavioural Inventory for Professionalism in Nursing was conducted as a national survey. Computer-generated random selection of nurses in Japan obtained responses from 1501 nurses. A descriptive design examined the levels of and differences in nursing professionalism. Comparisons of the total level of professionalism in educational preparation, current position, years of experience, and current practice setting were analysed by one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey-Kramer multiple comparison test. The results revealed that Japanese nurses had low levels of professionalism, and professionalism was related significantly to higher educational preparation, years of experience as a nurse, and current position as a nursing administrator or faculty. The results can be used as a benchmark for continued assessments of the level of nursing professionalism and for further development of nursing professionalism.
