Abstract

          Translated abstract

In an effort to identify responses pointing towards resilience in the behavioral system of individuals who are successful in confronting adversities and also to understand how such behaviors were developed, 220 adults (148 women and 72 men) were interviewed. The following instruments were used: Identification Data Form, Stress Symptom Inventory, Stressors Survey and Behaviors Pointing to Resilience Survey. It was observed that 72% of individuals were stressed out. There was a higher occurrence of psychological symptoms and 76% of the individuals stated that they were subjected to innumerous daily stressful situations. The main stressors mentioned were the administration of personal tasks, followed by the occupation itself. It was noted that men more frequently than the women in the sample showed a higher frequency of resilient behaviors. Moreover, men in the sample tended to show a greater ability to control emotions and to face new challenges. However, it was noticed both in men and women that, the individuals with more established sense of self-control and ability to understand the basis of adversities as well as those who were optimistic and sympathetic were less likely to show symptoms of chronic stress. A balanced emotional attitude was found to be the main protection factor. Most of those individuals who were not stressed considered that effective skills to confront the adversities were learned throughout the course of their lives.

          Stress, Appraisal, and Coping

The reissue of a classic work, now with a foreword by Daniel Goleman!
Here is a monumental work that continues in the tradition pioneered by co-author Richard Lazarus in his classic book Psychological Stress and the Coping Process. Dr. Lazarus and his collaborator, Dr. Susan Folkman, present here a detailed theory of psychological stress, building on the concepts of cognitive appraisal and coping which have become major themes of theory and investigation.

As an integrative theoretical analysis, this volume pulls together two decades of research and thought on issues in behavioral medicine, emotion, stress management, treatment, and life span development. A selective review of the most pertinent literature is included in each chapter. The total reference listing for the book extends to 60 pages.

This work is necessarily multidisciplinary, reflecting the many dimensions of stress-related problems and their situation within a complex social context. While the emphasis is on psychological aspects of stress, the book is oriented towards professionals in various disciplines, as well as advanced students and educated laypersons. The intended audience ranges from psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, and social workers to sociologists, anthropologists, medical researchers, and physiologists.

            Psychosocial resilience and protective mechanisms.

The concept of mechanisms that protect people against the psychological risks associated with adversity is discussed in relation to four main processes: reduction of risk impact, reduction of negative chain reactions, establishment and maintenance of self-esteem and self-efficacy, and opening up of opportunities. The mechanisms operating at key turning points in people's lives must be given special attention.

The construct of resilience: a critical evaluation and guidelines for future work.

This paper presents a critical appraisal of resilience, a construct connoting the maintenance of positive adaptation by individuals despite experiences of significant adversity. As empirical research on resilience has burgeoned in recent years, criticisms have been levied at work in this area. These critiques have generally focused on ambiguities in definitions and central terminology; heterogeneity in risks experienced and competence achieved by individuals viewed as resilient; instability of the phenomenon of resilience; and concerns regarding the usefulness of resilience as a theoretical construct. We address each identified criticism in turn, proposing solutions for those we view as legitimate and clarifying misunderstandings surrounding those we believe to be less valid. We conclude that work on resilience possesses substantial potential for augmenting the understanding of processes affecting at-risk individuals. Realization of the potential embodied by this construct, however, will remain constrained without continued scientific attention to some of the serious conceptual and methodological pitfalls that have been noted by skeptics and proponents alike.
