          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract The main objective of this work is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the adaptation to the Spanish language of the Revised Self Resilience Scale (Ego-Resilience Scale - R) of Alessandri et al. (2007) and Vecchione et al. (2010) in the adolescent population of Entre Ríos, Argentina from 11 to 17 years old. He analyzed the validity of the construct, its invariance according to sex and age and the levels of reliability. It is required on a non-probabilistic, intentional sample (N = 303). The students were secondary level students, 95 men (n = 95) and 208 women (n = 208), based in the city of Paraná, Entre Ríos. The instrument on which the adaptation was made is a short inventory, consisting of 10 items and in its original version is in English. The scale has two dimensions: Optimal Regulation and Opening to the Experience of Life. The results of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis allow corroborating the scale is multidimensional. With respect to internal consistency, the reliability coefficient was adequate both for the total score of the Scale and for the two dimensions analyzed separately. They found that the bifactorial model fits both men and women well, being invariant in terms of sex and also in terms of age. These findings are consistent with what is proposed by various authors. Thus, it is possible to affirm that the psychometric properties of the adaptation to the Spanish language carried out in Entre Ríos, Argentina, of this instrument are satisfactory.

Thanks Coefficient Alpha, We’ll Take It From Here.

Empirical studies in psychology commonly report Cronbach's alpha as a measure of internal consistency reliability despite the fact that many methodological studies have shown that Cronbach's alpha is riddled with problems stemming from unrealistic assumptions. In many circumstances, violating these assumptions yields estimates of reliability that are too small, making measures look less reliable than they actually are. Although methodological critiques of Cronbach's alpha are being cited with increasing frequency in empirical studies, in this tutorial we discuss how the trend is not necessarily improving methodology used in the literature. That is, many studies continue to use Cronbach's alpha without regard for its assumptions or merely cite methodological articles advising against its use to rationalize unfavorable Cronbach's alpha estimates. This tutorial first provides evidence that recommendations against Cronbach's alpha have not appreciably changed how empirical studies report reliability. Then, we summarize the drawbacks of Cronbach's alpha conceptually without relying on mathematical or simulation-based arguments so that these arguments are accessible to a broad audience. We continue by discussing several alternative measures that make less rigid assumptions which provide justifiably higher estimates of reliability compared to Cronbach's alpha. We conclude with empirical examples to illustrate advantages of alternative measures of reliability including omega total, Revelle's omega total, the greatest lower bound, and Coefficient H. A detailed software appendix is also provided to help researchers implement alternative methods. (PsycINFO Database Record

A methodological review of resilience measurement scales

Background The evaluation of interventions and policies designed to promote resilience, and research to understand the determinants and associations, require reliable and valid measures to ensure data quality. This paper systematically reviews the psychometric rigour of resilience measurement scales developed for use in general and clinical populations. Methods Eight electronic abstract databases and the internet were searched and reference lists of all identified papers were hand searched. The focus was to identify peer reviewed journal articles where resilience was a key focus and/or is assessed. Two authors independently extracted data and performed a quality assessment of the scale psychometric properties. Results Nineteen resilience measures were reviewed; four of these were refinements of the original measure. All the measures had some missing information regarding the psychometric properties. Overall, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Resilience Scale for Adults and the Brief Resilience Scale received the best psychometric ratings. The conceptual and theoretical adequacy of a number of the scales was questionable. Conclusion We found no current 'gold standard' amongst 15 measures of resilience. A number of the scales are in the early stages of development, and all require further validation work. Given increasing interest in resilience from major international funders, key policy makers and practice, researchers are urged to report relevant validation statistics when using the measures.
