Las analogías en la formulación de la teoría electromagnética de la luz de Maxwell

Abstract

Este trabajo se centra en los dos primeros artículos de James Clerk Maxwell sobre las líneas de fuerza magnética. ¿Qué llevó a Maxwell a escribir sobre este tema, y cómo influyeron en él las circunstancias tecnológicas de su tiempo? Y, sobre todo, ¿cómo logró, a partir del empleo de analogías mecánicas, entender la naturaleza de los campos electromagnéticos y concebir una teoría unificada del magnetismo, la electricidad y la luz? Se explora el proceso creativo de Maxwell y se intenta derivar de él algunas conclusiones útiles sobre la manera en que se hace ciencia.

Translated abstract

This article focuses on the two first James Clerk Maxwell papers on magnetic lines of force. What took Maxwell to write about this issue, and how did the technological circumstances of his time influence him? And, over all, how did he manage to understand, through the use of mechanical analogies, the nature of electromagnetic fields and manage to build a unified theory of magnetism, electricity and light? It is explored the creative process of Maxwell's mind, and then, it is attempted to infer some useful conclusions about the way science is done.
