Due to its position as a critical interface between the research community and government the National Research Foundation (NRF) has access to a multiplicity of channels which enable it to interact with all the stakeholders within South Africa's research and knowledge system. The objectives of our initiatives are to expand the scientific research and innovation capacity of South Africa and improve South Africa's international research and innovation competitiveness while responding to social and economic challenges of the country. Since its establishment in 1998, the NRF has evolved into a recognisable player and major contributor to the advancement of science, technology and research in the South African National System of Innovation (NSI). This evolution has been ushered in part by the growing need to establish South Africa as a global player and contributor to knowledge production and human capacity development. NRF aims to be a knowledgeable organisation that leads through exceptional expertise, understanding and execution of the research and knowledge enterprise of South Africa across all aspects of the NRF mandate.
