Abstract

RESUMEN Después de examinar la creación de los distintos asentamientos humanos que se verificaron en el desierto de Atacama en el siglo XIX, principalmente en la costa, y la cuantificación de la población chilena inmigrada por efectos de la explotación del guano y la explotación del salitre, se estudian las variaciones y rasgos de la población chilena entre 1870 y 1880 en la ciudad de Antofagasta y del mineral de plata de Caracoles. Para ello, se utilizan los repertorios municipales, parroquiales del periodo boliviano y los despachos consulares chilenos.

ABSTRACT After examining the establishment of various human settlements that took place in the Atacama Desert in the 19th century, primarily along the coast, and quantifying the Chilean immigrant population resulting from the exploitation of guano and nitrate, this study focuses on the variations and characteristics of the Chilean population between 1870 and 1880 in the city of Antofagasta and the silver mine of Caracoles. Municipal and parish records from the Bolivian period, as well as Chilean consular dispatches, are utilized for this purpose.
