          Abstract

High pressure gas quenching is a process for the hardening of steel parts which allows flexibility of operations, a reduced environmental impact, and a potential for controlling distortions. However this process remains mainly devoted to carburizing process or to low cooling rates quenching. Modelling offers an interesting path for extending the applications for gas quenching and optimizing the process. An original numerical tool coupling fluid flow, heat transfer and phase transformations has been developed by coupling both numerical codes Fluent and Sysweld. First, the choice of the turbulence model used for the fluid flow calculation with Fluent is discussed for a simple geometry for which lots of experimental results exist in the literature. Then, an application example for cooling of a C80 steel cylinder is presented, focusing on the analysis of the influence of phase transformations on the evolution of the heat transfer coefficient with wall temperature.
