          Abstract

This study provides an updated checklist and an illustrated guide to the 17 currently known stygobiont Malacostraca species of the state of Yucatan (Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico). The compilation is based on the individuals collected during our cave-diving expeditions (2016–2019), and, has the purpose of expanding previous knowledge on the taxonomy of these subterranean crustaceans. The identification guide contains drawings of the main diagnostic characters of the species as well as a brief introduction of the relevant malacostracan orders. The information is further complemented with a historic account and timeline of the stygobiont Malacostraca species of the Yucatan Peninsula. This is the first study that provides a unified tool for the morphological identification of these highly endemic species.

A Phylogeny and Classification of the Senticaudata subord. nov. Crustacea: Amphipoda)

The Amphipoda includes a large clade defined by the presence of a previously unrecognised synapomorphy, apical robust setae on the rami of uropods 1–2. We term this clade the Senticaudata subord. nov. (Latin: sentis = thorn). It includes almost all freshwater species as well as a number of marine benthic taxa, formerly part of the ‘Gammaridea’. The phylogeny of the senticaudates was determined by cladistic analysis of morphological characters and character states. Within the suborder Senticaudata there are six infraorders: Carangoliopsida, Talitrida, Hadziida, Corophiida, Bogidiellida and Gammarida. A classification is provided and all the senticaudate families are diagnosed. We introduce for the first time in amphipod classification, the level parvorder between infraorder and superfamily. Four new families are described: Kairosidae; Eriopisidae; Nuuanuidae and Kergueleniolidae.

Toward a unified taxonomy of Niphargus (Crustacea: Amphipoda): a review of morphological variability

Niphargus is the largest genus of freshwater amphipods, burdened with problematic and largely incomplete taxonomy. This paper is an overview of the morphological characters relevant for niphargid taxonomy, and is conceived as an early step toward a unified taxonomy in the emerging era of cyber-taxonomy. The core element is a taxonomic on-line revision system based on a continuously updated, peer-reviewed and freely accessible morpho-databases (see for example http:// niphargus.info/) that would provide a source of data necessary for comparisons of taxa, generation of species descriptions, and testing phylogenetic hypotheses. In Niphargus, the coding of morphological variability is not straightforward. Several characters are continuous, polymorphic, or subject to allometric growth. We here present a detailed overview of published and new characters together with their variability levels, and describe how the characters are measured and quantified.
