          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Ten male, purebred healthy horses were included in the present study. Clinical parameters as well as biochemical and cellular characteristics in/of the plasma and peritoneal fluid were evaluated over 24 hours (0, 6, 12 and 24h) after cecal trocharization. Microbiological analysis of the peritoneal fluid were also performed at the same time. Body temperature elevation was observed between T6 and T12 and increased cardiac rate (increased) at T6. Total protein, density and alkaline phosphatase activity in the peritoneal fluid increased at T24. Plasma ALT activity and hemoglobin decreased at T6 and T12, respectively. No cellular changes were detected in blood and peritoneal fluid. Microbiological cultures results were negative and no late complications were observed. Considering that the cecal centesis induces temporary systemic and peritoneal changes in normal horses with no adverse effects, it should be considered safe for using in the routine cases, when properly used.

            Nonstrangulated colonic displacement in horses.

            R Hackett (1983)
Nonstrangulated colonic displacement was diagnosed by exploratory celiotomy in 32 horses with acute abdominal pain. Clinical signs progressed slowly and included evidence of mild to moderate abdominal pain, good cardiovascular status, reduced intestinal sounds, and normal peritoneal fluid, and resembled those of colonic impaction. In most horses, rectal palpation supported a diagnosis of colonic obstruction but not a diagnosis of colonic impaction.

Further experiences with non-surgical correction of nephrosplenic entrapment of the left colon in the horse.

              H Kalsbeek (1989)
Non-surgical correction of nephrosplenic entrapment of the left colon was attempted in 27 cases. In two cases the method failed and a laparotomy was necessary. Two other horses had a recurrence, one of which underwent laparotomy because of torsion of the caecal body.
