          Abstract

          Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the differences in the levels of physical activity practiced during the weekdays and weekends in obese postmenopausal women. Method: 117 post-menopausal women aged between 50 and 79 were evaluated. To estimate the percentage of body fat the Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry was used. The assessment of physical activity level was obtained using a tri-axial accelerometer. Results: There was a significant increase in physical activity-light and a significant decrease in physical activity moderate, vigorous, moderate-vigorous and overall number of counts at the weekend compared to the weekdays. The physical activity moderate-vigorous reduced by an average of 38.6% (p < 0.001) at the weekend compared to the weekdays. Conclusion: Obese post-menopausal women presented decreasing physical activity moderate, vigorous, moderate-vigorous and overall number of counts at the weekends compared to the weekdays and an increase in physical activity light.

          Resumen Objetivo: Comparar las diferencias en los niveles de actividad física practicada durante los días de semana y fines de semana en las mujeres obesas posmenopáusicas. Método: Se evaluaron 117 mujeres post-menopáusicas de edades comprendidas entre 50 y 79 años. Para calcular el porcentaje de grasa corporal se utilizó la absorciometría de rayos X de doble energía. Se obtuvo la evaluación del nivel de actividad física mediante un acelerómetro triaxial. Resultados: Hubo un aumento significativo en la actividad física suave y una disminución significativa en la actividad física moderada, vigorosa, moderada-vigorosa y el número total de recuentos en el fin de semana en comparación con los días de la semana. La actividad física moderada-vigorosa se redujo en un promedio del 38.6% (p < 0.001) en el fin de semana en comparación con los días de la semana. Conclusión: Las mujeres obesas posmenopáusicas presentaron disminución de la actividad física moderada, vigorosa, moderada-vigorosa y el número total de recuentos en los fines de semana en comparación con los días de la semana y un aumento de actividad física suave.

          Resumo Objetivo: Comparar as diferenças nos níveis de atividade física feitas durante a semana e fins de semana em mulheres pós-menopáusicas com obesidade. Método: Foram avaliadas 117 mulheres na pós-menopausa com idade entre 50 e 79 anos. Para o cálculo do percentual de gordura corporal foi utilizado raios-X absorciometria de dupla energia. Se obteve a evolução do nível de atividade física por um acelerómetro triaxial. Resultados: Houve um aumento significativo na atividade física leve e uma diminuição significativa na atividade física moderada, vigorosa, moderada a vigorosa e o número total de contagens no fim de semana em comparação com a semana. Atividade física moderada a vigorosa foi reduzida por uma média de 38.6% (p < 0.001) no fim de semana em comparação com a semana. Conclusão: As mulheres obesas na pós menopausa apresentaram uma diminuição da atividade física moderada, vigorosa, moderada a vigorosa e o no número total de contagens nos fins de semana em comparação com a semana e aumento da atividade física suave.

          Limits to the measurement of habitual physical activity by questionnaires.

          Despite extensive use over 40 years, physical activity questionnaires still show limited reliability and validity. Measurements have value in indicating conditions where an increase in physical activity would be beneficial and in monitoring changes in population activity. However, attempts at detailed interpretation in terms of exercise dosage and the extent of resulting health benefits seem premature. Such usage may become possible through the development of standardised instruments that will record the low intensity activities typical of sedentary societies, and will ascribe consistent biological meaning to terms such as light, moderate, and heavy exercise.

            The metabolic syndrome: prevalence and associated risk factor findings in the US population from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994.

            The metabolic syndrome is an important cluster of coronary heart disease risk factors with common insulin resistance. The extent to which the metabolic syndrome is associated with demographic and potentially modifiable lifestyle factors in the US population is unknown. Metabolic syndrome-associated factors and prevalence, as defined by Adult Treatment Panel III criteria, were evaluated in a representative US sample of 3305 black, 3477 Mexican American, and 5581 white men and nonpregnant or lactating women aged 20 years and older who participated in the cross-sectional Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The metabolic syndrome was present in 22.8% and 22.6% of US men and women, respectively (P =.86). The age-specific prevalence was highest in Mexican Americans and lowest in blacks of both sexes. Ethnic differences persisted even after adjusting for age, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. The metabolic syndrome was present in 4.6%, 22.4%, and 59.6% of normal-weight, overweight, and obese men, respectively, and a similar distribution was observed in women. Older age, postmenopausal status, Mexican American ethnicity, higher body mass index, current smoking, low household income, high carbohydrate intake, no alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity were associated with increased odds of the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome is present in more than 20% of the US adult population; varies substantially by ethnicity even after adjusting for body mass index, age, socioeconomic status, and other predictor variables; and is associated with several potentially modifiable lifestyle factors. Identification and clinical management of this high-risk group is an important aspect of coronary heart disease prevention.

              Validation and comparison of ActiGraph activity monitors.

              To compare activity counts from the ActiGraph GT3X to those from the ActiGraph GT1M during treadmill walking/running. A secondary aim was to develop tri-axial vector magnitude (VM3) cut-points to classify physical activity (PA) intensity. Fifty participants wore the GT3X and the GT1M on the non-dominant hip and exercised at 4 treadmill speeds (4.8, 6.4, 9.7, and 12 km h(-1)). Vertical (VT) and antero-posterior (AP) activity counts (counts min(-1)) as well as the vector magnitudes of the two axes (VM2) from both monitors were tested for significant differences using two-way ANOVA's. Bland-Altman plots were used to assess agreement between activity counts from the GT3X and GT1M. Linear regression analysis between VM3 countsmin(-1) and oxygen consumption data was conducted to develop VM3 cut-points for moderate, hard and very hard PA. There were no significant inter-monitor differences in VT activity counts at any speed. AP and VM2 activity counts from the GT1M were significantly higher (p 9642 counts min(-1). Due to the lack of congruence between the AP and VM2 activity counts from the GT1M and the GT3X, comparisons of data obtained with these two monitors should be avoided when using more than just the VT axis.
