          Abstract

We present a review of the measurements of the CKM angle beta (phi_1) by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy e+e- B Factories PEP-II and KEKB. The angle beta (phi_1) is measured by time-dependent CP analyses of neutral B meson decays in a Upsilon(4S)->BBbar system, where one B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state that can be accessed to by both B0 and B0bar, usually a CP eigenstate. This angle has been measured at a high precision through B0-> (ccbar)K0 channels. We also review another tree-dominated decay B0-> D(*)0 h0 (h0 = pi0, eta^{'}, omega); tree decays with penguin pollutions, B0->D(*)+-D-+$ and J/psi pi0; and penguin dominated modes, B0-> eta^'K0, K+K-K0, and KsKsKs. A hint of sin2beta (sin2phi_1) in charmless modes less than (ccbar)K0 modes still persists, which may be an indication of possible new physics entering the loop in the penguin diagram.

The Effect of Penguins in the B_d to J/psi K^0 CP asymmetry

Performing a fit to the available experimental data, we quantify the effect of long-distance contributions from penguin contractions in B^0 to J/psi K^0 decays. We estimate the deviation of the measured S_CP term of the time-dependent CP asymmetry from sin(2 beta) induced by these contributions and by the penguin operators. We find Delta S = 0.000 +- 0.012 ([-0.025,0.024] @ 95% probability).

Effects of Final-state Interactions on Mixing-induced CP Violation in Penguin-dominated B Decays

Motivated by the recent indications of the possibility of sizable deviations of the mixing-induced CP violation parameter, \(S_f\), in the penguin-dominated \(b\to sq\bar q\) transition decays such as \(B^0\to (\phi,\omega,\rho^0,\eta',\eta,\pi^0,f_0)K_S\) from \(\sin 2\beta\) determined from \(B\to J/\psi K_S\), we study final-state rescattering effects on their decay rates and CP violation. Recent observations of large direct CP asymmetry in modes such as \(B^0\to K^+\pi^-,\rho^-\pi^+\) means that final state phases in 2-body B decays may not be small. It is therefore important to examine these long-distance effects on penguin-dominated decays. Such long-distance effects on \(S_f\) are found to be generally small [i.e. \({\cal O}(1-2%)\)] or negligible except for the \(\omega K_S\) and \(\rho^0K_S\) modes where \(S_f\) is lowered by around 15% for the former and increased by the same percentage for the latter. However, final-state rescattering can enhance the \(\omega K_S, \phi K_S, \eta'K_S, \rho^0K_S\) and \(\pi^0K_S\) rates significantly and flip the signs of direct CP asymmetries of the last two modes. Direct CP asymmetries in \(\omega K_S\) and \(\rho^0K_S\) channels are predicted to be \(\A_{\omega K_S}\approx -0.13\) and \(\A_{\rho^0K_S}\approx 0.47\), respectively. However, direct CP asymmetry in all the other \(b\to s\) penguin dominated modes that we study is found to be rather small (a few percents), rendering these modes a viable place to search for the CP-odd phases beyond the standard model.

              Bi-maximal Neutrino Mixing Pattern Reexamined

I propose a simple extension of the bi-maximal neutrino mixing pattern, allowing slight coupling between solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations as well as large CP violation. The new scenario is compatible with either the vacuum oscillation solution or the large-angle MSW solution to the solar neutrino
