          Abstract

ABSTRACT Condylar hyperplasia is a developmental malformation that causes abnormal growth of the mandibular condyle. It is a generic term that describes conditions that cause excessive growth and elongation of the mandibular condyle, altering the occlusion and indirectly affecting the maxilla. The usual treatment for this pathology consists of a condylectomy through an extraoral approach. The objective of this work is to present the case of an active unilateral condylar hyperplasia, which was treated by low condylectomy with an intraoral approach and orthognathic surgery. The intraoral approach to a condylectomy has been poorly documented; however it offers numerous advantages and can be performed safely.

Condylar hyperplasia: An updated review of the literature

Condylar hyperplasia (CH) is a rare disorder characterized by excessive bone growth that almost always presents unilaterally, resulting in facial asymmetry. Classification of the different types of CH can differ depending on the authors. Correct diagnosis is critical in determining the proper treatments and timing. This paper is a review of the recent literature on the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, classification, and surgical treatments of CH.

Surgery of the temporomandibular joint. I. Surgical anatomy and surgical incisions.

Surgical anatomy is highly specific and correlates well with the surgical approaches to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The preauricular, endaural, and postauricular incisions are used for conventional surgery and microsurgery of the TMJ. Indications for the selection of the desired incision are given. The surgical technique of each incision is described in detail. Elevation of a continuous superoinferior flap of the temporalis fascia, the periosteum over the zygomatic arch, and the paratideomasseteric fascia lifts up and protects the branches of the facial nerve. Elevation in this fascia plane results in a skin-fascia flap with the branches of the facial nerve contained and protected within the tissues. This basic skin-fascia flap is developed in all three incisions--the preauricular, the endaural, and the postauricular.
