          Abstract

          Este artículo explora el grado de equidad educativa en la educación terciaria y universitaria en algunos países de América Latina. La investigación se basa en microdatos de las encuestas de hogares. Las principales conclusiones obtenidas pueden resumirse en cinco proposiciones: entre el 30% y 50% de los jóvenes que logran concluir sus estudios de nivel medio, acceden al nivel superior; en la mayoría de los países analizados existe equiparación de los géneros en el acceso a la educación superior; las tasas netas de escolarización según ingreso per capita de los hogares revelan que la cobertura es más equitativa en el nivel terciario que en el universitario; la estudiante típica del terciario constituye la primera generación de su familia que accede a la educación superior y en su mayoría trabaja al mismo tiempo que estudia; quienes acceden al terciario muestran mayores probabilidades de graduarse que los que lo han hecho en el nivel universitario.

          Este artigo explora o grau de equidade educativa na educação terciária e universitária em alguns países da América Latina. A investigação se apoia em microdados das pesquisas em lares. As principais conclusões obtidas podem resumir-se em cinco proposições: 30% a 50% dos jovens que conseguem concluir os estudos em nível médio têm acesso ao nível superior; na maioria dos países analisados existe equiparação de gênero no acesso à educação superior; as taxas nítidas de escolaridade segundo a renda per capita dos lares revelam que a cobertura é mais equitativa no nível terciário que no universitário; a estudante típica do nível terciário constitui a primeira geração de sua família com acesso à educação superior e a maioria trabalha ao mesmo tempo em que estuda; quem acede ao nível terciário mostra maiores probabilidades de formar-se do que os que o têm feito no nível universitário.

          Translated abstract

          This paper examines the degree of educational equity in third and university education in some countries of Latin America. The research is based on microdata collected via household surveys. The main conclusions can be summarized in five proposals: from 30% to 50% of students who achieve to conclude their medium level studies gain access to higher education; in most of the analyzed countries there are equal opportunities for women and men with regard to access to higher education. The net rate of education in accordance with per capita income reveals that coverage is more equitable in the third level than at the university level; the typical female third-level student belongs to the first generation of their family to gain access to higher education and in most cases work while studying; those with access to the third -level evidence higher probabilities to graduate than those in university.
