Occupational Factors Associated with Health-Related Quality of Life in Nursing Professionals: A Multi-Centre Study

Background: Nursing professionals are exposed to stressful situations arising from the work context that may affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The objective of this study was to analyse the relationship between sociodemographic and work-related variables regarding HRQoL in nursing professionals. Methods: A multi-centre, cross-sectional descriptive design was used. The participants consisted 1521 nurses working in healthcare centres, in both primary care and hospital care, in the eight provinces of the Andalusian Public Health System (APHS), Spain. Sociodemographic and work-related variables were analysed: Compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and burnout were measured using the professional quality of life questionnaire (ProQOL), and HRQoL was measured using the SF-12 health questionnaire. Results: Compassion fatigue, burnou, and, to a lesser extent, compassion satisfaction significantly influence the physical and mental components of HRQoL. The simple regression analysis showed that burnout and compassion fatigue were significantly associated with the mental component of HRQoL. Gender influenced the mental component of HRQoL. The rest of the sociodemographic and work-related variables were not significantly related to HRQoL. Conclusion: Work-related stress and repeated contact with situations of suffering influence HRQoL. Health systems must implement programmes to increase the emotional well-being of workers.

Work addiction and quality of life: a study with physicians

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the quality of life of physicians and investigate to what extent it is affected by work addiction. Methods This is an exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study, conducted with 1,110 physicians. For data collection, we used a questionnaire with sociodemographic information, the World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF, and the Work Addiction Scale. Results Most physicians presented high quality of life. Female participants presented lower quality of life in the domains psychologic, environment and general (p<0.05). Quality of life was negatively correlated with the number of shifts (p<0.005). The higher the addiction to work, the lower the quality of life. Conclusion The research allowed understanding the implications of work addiction in the quality of life. Further studies are required to support the development of strategies that improve health conditions and quality of life of medical professionals.

The quality of life of family health professionals: a systematic review and meta-synthesis

ABSTRACT Objectives: to perform a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies about the work-related quality of life of Family Health Strategy professionals. Methods: this systematic review was developed to answer the following PVO question: “Which factors (variables) are associated with the work-related quality of life (outcome) of Family Health Strategy professionals (population)?” The PubMed, Scopus, Embase, SciELO, Web of Science, LILACS, Science Direct, OpenThesis, OpenGrey, and OATD databases were selected. The meta-synthesis analyzed the main codes and secondary codes of all included studies. Results: the database search resulted in 1,744 reports; six were considered eligible for the meta-synthesis. Four factors were considered for the quality of work life: working conditions; work processes; interpersonal relationships; and personal aspects. Conclusions: although this study confirms the adequacy of aspects commonly related to the quality of work life, other factors are important in the case of FHS professionals, especially work context.
