          Abstract

We have measured the electric transport properties of TiN nanostrips with different widths. At zero magnetic field the temperature dependent resistance R(T) saturates at a finite resistance towards low temperatures, which results from quantum phase slips in the narrower strips. We find that the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the narrowest strips are equivalent to those of small Josephson junctions. Applying a transverse magnetic field drives the devices into a reentrant insulating phase, with I-V-characteristics dual to those in the superconducting regime. The results evidence that our critically disordered superconducting nanostrips behave like small self-organized random Josephson networks.

Measurement of the effect of quantum phase-slips in a Josephson Junction chain

We investigate experimentally the physics of quantum phase slips in one-dimensional Josephson Junction chains. These quantum phase-slips are induced by quantum phase fluctuations occurring on single junctions of the chain. In our experiment we can tune the strength of these fluctuations as each chain junction is realized in form of a SQUID leading to tunable Josephson coupling. We determine the ground state of the chain via switching current measurements of the chain shunted by a large Josephson junction. Our results can be well fitted with a tight binding Hamiltonian taking into account quantum phase-slips.

Crossover from Josephson to multiple Andreev reflection currents in atomic contacts.

The basic current-carrying mechanism through a superconducting weak link embedded in a resistive environment undergoes a continuous crossover, as the voltage increases, from Josephson Cooper pair transfer exciting electromagnetic modes in the environment to multiple Andreev reflections leading to the creation of quasiparticles. We corroborate these ideas through measurements of the dc current-voltage characteristics of superconducting atomic contacts containing channels of arbitrary and adjustable transmission. We present a simple model, in the spirit of the classical resistively shunted junction model, that accounts well for the observed characteristics.
