          Abstract

Abstract Objective: To present the process of construction and validation of an instrument with management indicators for composing a software of nurse dimensioning in the delivery and postpartum. Methods: composed of three steps: the first, defined as the construction of the instrument; the second, the validation by judges. The third, composed by final structuring of the instrument and calculation of the Content Validity Index and Cronbach's Alpha. Results: Of the instrument items with the indicators approved by the specialists, nine obtained individual Content Validity Index between 0.75 and 0.92 and three indicators with a value of 1.0, with a total Content Validity Index of 0.89. Conclusions: The results obtained in the evaluation of the Cronbach's Alpha and the Content Validity Index demonstrate an internal consistency and the reliability of the instrument with 12 indicators.

The content validity index: are you sure you know what's being reported? Critique and recommendations.

Scale developers often provide evidence of content validity by computing a content validity index (CVI), using ratings of item relevance by content experts. We analyzed how nurse researchers have defined and calculated the CVI, and found considerable consistency for item-level CVIs (I-CVIs). However, there are two alternative, but unacknowledged, methods of computing the scale-level index (S-CVI). One method requires universal agreement among experts, but a less conservative method averages the item-level CVIs. Using backward inference with a purposive sample of scale development studies, we found that both methods are being used by nurse researchers, although it was not always possible to infer the calculation method. The two approaches can lead to different values, making it risky to draw conclusions about content validity. Scale developers should indicate which method was used to provide readers with interpretable content validity information. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Selection and use of content experts for instrument development.

Content experts frequently are used in the judgment-quantification stage of content validation of instruments. However, errors in instrumentation may arise when important steps in selecting and using these experts are not carefully planned. The systematic process of choosing, orienting, and using content experts in the judgment-qualification stage of instrument development is addressed, with particular attention to the often neglected, important step of familiarizing these experts with the conceptual underpinnings and measurement model of the instrument. An example using experts to validate content for a measure of caregiver burden is used to illustrate this stage of instrument review.
