      Physicians and healthcare professionals in the era of #Metoo

          Abstract

          Gender Based Violence is and has been a pervasive problem in our societies and communities. In recent times, there has been a renewed emphasis on the problem given the #MeToo movement and social activism. In this editorial, we discuss healthcare professions and gender-based violence in light of the #MeToo movement. Also, three major types of exchanges in the healthcare field have been described in relation to gender-based violence. Implications for practice and prevention of gender-based violence in healthcare systems worldwide have been discussed. Healthcare industry is one of the biggest and most prominent enterprises worldwide with lives at stake. Safety of providers and patients and violence free healthcare workplaces can significantly improve health outcomes. The #MeToo movement reminds us of our responsibilities and professional codes of conduct and demands that we always keep at the forefront—the rights of those we serve or interact with.

          Violence against women in health-care institutions: an emerging problem.

          Maternal morbidity and mortality in childbirth is a matter of utmost importance in public health. In this article, we argue that part of the problem lies in violence committed by health workers in childbearing or abortion services, which affects health-service access, compliance, quality, and effectiveness. We analysed rigorous research from the past decade and discuss four forms of violent abuse by doctors and nurses: neglect and verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. These forms of violence recur, are often deliberate, are a serious violation of human rights, and are related to poor quality and effectiveness of health-care services. This abuse is a means of controlling patients that is learnt during training and reinforced in health facilities. Abuse occurs mainly in situations in which the legitimacy of health services is questionable or can be the result of prejudice against certain population groups. We discuss ways to prevent violent abuse.

            Physician's gender, communication style, patient preferences and patient satisfaction in gynecology and obstetrics: a systematic review.

            Review of studies published in the last 10 years about women seeking gynecological- or obstetrical care and physician's gender in relation to patient preferences, differences in communication style and patient satisfaction. Studies were identified by searching the online databases PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase and the Cochrane Library. The search strategies 'gender'; 'obstetrics' and 'gynecology' were combined with 'communication'; 'physician-patient relations'; 'patient preference' and 'patient satisfaction'. After screening title and abstract, evaluating full text and quality assessment, 9 articles were included in this review. Most patients preferred a female rather than a male gynecologist-obstetrician. This was partly explained by a more patient-centered communication style used by female gynecologists-obstetricians. Also experience and clinical competence were important factors in choosing a gynecologist-obstetrician. It was not clear whether patient's age or ethnicity influenced patients gender preference. Patient satisfaction increased when gynecologists-obstetricians used a patient-centered communication style. Preference for a female gynecologist-obstetrician might be explained by a more patient-centered communication style used by female gynecologists-obstetricians. Using a patient-centered communication style increases patient satisfaction. To increase patient satisfaction, gynecologists-obstetricians should learn to integrate patient-centered communication style into the consultation. Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
