      Analogical and Digital Workflow in the Design and Preparation of the Emergence Profile of Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique (BOPT) Crowns over Implants in the Working Model

          Abstract

          The Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique (BOPT), developed by Ignacio Loi and published in 2008, is a consolidated concept in the modeling and preservation of pericoronal soft tissues. The present study describes the analogical and digital methods allowing adequate design and preparation of the emergence profile of BOPT crowns in the working model, with a view to comparing the workflow and advantages of each method. At present, not all the digital procedures have been fully optimized to completely replace the traditional analogical methods. Nevertheless, it is only a matter of time until dental digitalization technology totally replaces the analogical clinical methods. The digital workflow for this procedure is quickly implemented and optimized, and represents the most realistic option, with possibilities for further development in the immediate future.

          Current status and applications of additive manufacturing in dentistry: A literature-based review

          Objective To study the current status and applications of additive manufacturing (AM) in dentistry along with various technologies, benefits and future scope. Methods A significant number of relevant research papers on the additive manufacturing application in dentistry are identified through Scopus and studied using bibliometric analysis that shows an increasing trend of research in this field. This paper briefly describes various types of AM technologies with their accuracy, pros and cons along with different dental materials. Paper also discusses various benefits of AM in dentistry and steps used to create 3D printed dental model using this technology. Further, ten major AM applications in dentistry are identified along with primary references and objectives. Results Additive manufacturing is an innovative technique moving towards the customised production of dental implants and other dental tools using computer-aided design (CAD) data. This technology is used to manufacture elaborate dental crowns, bridges, orthodontic braces and can also various other models, devices and instruments with lesser time and cost. With the help of this disruptive innovation, dental implants are fabricated accurately as per patient data captured by the dental 3D scanner. The application of this technology is also being explored for the precise manufacturing of removal prosthetics, aligners, surgical templates for implants and produce models that for the planning of treatment and preoperative positioning of the jaws.

            The time efficiency of intraoral scanners: an in vitro comparative study.

            Although intraoral scanners are known to have good accuracy in computer-aided impression making (CAIM), their effect on time efficiency is not. Little is known about the time required to make a digital impression. The purpose of the authors' in vitro investigation was to evaluate the time efficiency of intraoral scanners.

              Biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT): a new approach for prosthetic restoration of periodontically healthy teeth.

              Tooth preparations for fixed prosthetic restorations can be done in different ways, basically of two kinds: preparation with a defined margin and the so-called vertical preparation or feather edge. The latter was originally used for prosthetics on teeth treated with resective surgery for periodontal disease. In this article, the author presents a prosthetic technique for periodontally healthy teeth using feather edge preparation in a flapless approach in both esthetic and posterior areas with ceramometal and zirconia restorations, achieving high quality clinical and esthetic results in terms of soft tissue stability at the prosthetic/tissue interface, both in the short and in the long term (clinical follow-up up to fifteen years). Moreover, the BOPT technique, if compared to other preparation techniques (chamfer, shoulder, etc), is simpler and faster when in preparation impression taking, temporary crowns' relining and creating the crowns' profiles up to the final prosthetic restoration.
