          Abstract

Schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumour that originates from schwann cells of the peripheral nerve. In spite of constituting 25-40% of head and neck tumours its in-traoral presentation is rare which accounts for only 1%. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the rarity of this lesion, to emphasize the significance of an accurate diagnosis and to include tumours of nerve sheath origin in the differential diagnosis of facial asymmetry.

Nerve sheath tumors of the paranasal sinuses: electron microscopy and histopathologic diagnosis.

Tumors of the nerve sheaths are very unusual. They occur with the highest frequency in the head and neck region, yet only 4% have been found to occur within the paranasal sinuses. Only 40 cases of nerve sheath tumors with direct involvement of the paranasal sinuses have been reported in the world's literature to date. Three new cases of neurofibroma not associated with Recklinghausen's disease and one case of a schwannoma of the frontoethmoid and maxillary sinuses are presented. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of these lesions will be discussed with emphasis on electron microscopy and immunohistochemical differentiation of these rare and often confusing lesions.

Ancient schwannoma of the infratemporal fossa.

This article describes a case of ancient schwannoma of the infratemporal fossa. Ancient schwannoma is a rare variant of the neurilemmoma, which clinical findings and radiographic features suggest is a slow-growing, benign tumour. Histopathologic features such as hypercellularity with nuclear atypia can make accurate diagnosis of this tumour difficult. The treatment of this tumour is complete resection, and the prognosis is good.

              Extracranial head and neck schwannomas.

Extracranial head and neck schwannomas are usually benign and rarely malignant tumors of peripheral nerve sheath origin. The clinical presentation of these tumors is reviewed in our series of 21 patients, emphasizing the diagnosis with dynamic infused CT scans. Management is suggested and outcome analysis is provided.
