          Abstract

          Translated abstract

The figures of radical otherness in Chilean literary space, conceived here as the disquieting site of the irruption of the other destined to be forgotten in analysis, memory and history, are multiple. I will limit myself on this occasion to showing one of these sites. It is perhaps that which gives testimony in the most hyperbolic fashion to the sacrificial character of the myth of modernity in the nation that today is sweetly heard as the "great common project of arriving to the Bicentennial as a developed country". I am referring to the alterity of ethnicity. Those people of the mirrors of Borge’s story in which Baudrillard reads the beautiful allegory of those original peoples deprived of their force that today pose to the social and political order an insoluble problem: "they will break the barriers of crystal and metal and this time they will not be defeated"
