          Abstract

          Translated abstract

The aim of this review is to evaluate the main variables and aspects that influence patients’ perceptions of dentists as reported in mainstream literature. The articles were retrieved from PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar. We found that patients´ perceptions rely primarily on their previous experience with the professional, as some people value the professional´s technical skills, while others value their communication skills. Among the negative perceptions are the fear of pain and how to handle it, which can limit dental care seeking behaviors, and the availability and cost of dental care. Other factors: age -patient and dentist- and sex, as when patient and dentist are both men or women, the shame and fear of physical contact during the exam is reduced

Dignity and respect for dignity--two key health professional values: implications for nursing practice.

It is argued that dignity can be considered both subjectively, taking into account individual differences and idiosyncrasies, and objectively, as the foundation of human rights. Dignity can and should also be explored as both an other-regarding and a self-regarding value: respect for the dignity of others and respect for one's own personal and professional dignity. These two values appear to be inextricably linked. Aristotle's doctrine of the mean enables nurses to reflect on the appropriate degree of respect for the dignity of others and of respect for themselves. To develop an understanding of the rationale for and the significance and implications of dignity in health care practice, a view of human nature is proposed that implies vulnerability and fallibility, and that urges that an ethic of aspiration is embraced. Anonymized vignettes are included to illustrate points about the everyday nature of dignity.

            Children’s Perception of Their Dentists

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess school children’s feelings and attitudes toward their dentist. Methods: A questionnaire designed to evaluate children’s attitudes and preferences toward dentists was completed by 583 children (289 females, 294 males) with age range 9–12 years attending public schools. Results: 76% of the children who completed the questionnaire reported that they had been to the dentist before. Of the children who had visited the dentist, approximately 64% reported liking their visit, 11% didn’t like their visit, and 12% were afraid. 90% of the children preferred their dentist to wear a white coat, while 40% preferred them to wear a mask and protective eye glasses as protective measures during treatment. When asked to choose between two pictures of different clinical settings, 63% of the children indicated that they preferred a decorated dental clinic over a plain clinic. Fear of local anesthesia and tooth extraction were the most common reasons cited for not liking dental treatment. Conclusions: Children have strong perceptions and preferences regarding their dentists. Data collected for this study can be used by dentists to improve delivery of care.

              A Couceiro (2006)
