¿Reformar al individuo o reformar la sociedad?: Un punto central en el desarrollo cronológico del pensamiento social de San Alberto Hurtado

Abstract

La preocupación social es una nota característica constante a lo largo de toda la vida de San Alberto Hurtado. Pero la lectura cronológica de los escritos revela un cambio en el modo de comprender la misión de la Iglesia en terreno social. Este cambio se verifica entre una preocupación moral más centrada en el individuo hacia una moral más específicamente social. Frente a la disyuntiva entre la reforma estructural y la reforma individual, Alberto Hurtado, en su madurez, declara la insuficiencia de ambas reformas y, por tanto, afirma la necesidad de ambas, otorgando la prioridad a la reforma del hombre, pero advirtiendo que esta prioridad no es cronológica. Finalmente, el desarrollo del artículo demuestra la necesidad de estudiar el pensamiento social del Padre Hurtado en el contexto de sus convicciones de fe.

Translated abstract

Social concern is a characteristic theme throughout the entire life of St. Alberto Hurtado. Howeber, a chronological reading of his writings reveáis a change in his mode of understanding the mission of the Church in social terrain. This change is verified as moving from a moral concern principally centered on the individual, and leading towards a more specifically social morality. In the face of this contrast between structural reform and individual reform, Alberto Hurtado, in his mature years, declares the insufficiency of either reform and, thereby, affirms the need for both, giving priority to the reform of the human person, but warning that this priority is not chronological. Finally, the development of the article demonstrates the need for study of the social thought of Padre Hurtado, within the context of his faith convictions.
