In this article the ‘ecuacionales’ and ‘ecuandicionales’ constructions are examined comparatively with the double intention of characterizing their formal, syntactic and informative properties, on one hand; and, on the other, to evaluate their performance as syntactic resources of emphasis. To accomplish these objectives, a functional methodology is used, which includes a set of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic functions, which are applied to a corpus of 120 samples (110 ‘ecuacionales’ and 10 ‘ecuandicionales’), which was obtained from a line-by-line analysis from Chilean newspapers of nationalwide circulation. The analysis procedure is applied to every term of reference of the sample in the paradigmatic and syntagmatic dimensions, deducing features that relate to and distinguish these sentences. According to this precision, this study is intended to reveal peculiarities related to the form and pragmagramatical behavior. Among the relevant results, it is necessary to emphasize the metalinguistic function that is stated in both constructions, in the sense of their capacity to discriminate between grammatical structures of various levels. To this, it is possible to add the unequal discursive productivity show by these mechanisms of emphasis. These results agree with those obtained in other studies, but unlike those, our findings are in the area of the gramatical complexity and this implies the employment of these emphatic devices, in which a syntactic extraction is produced from which important informative consequences stem are derived.
