          Abstract

The peculiar features of ovarian cancer metastasization in the greater omentum have been studied. A retrospective analysis of the data on 268 operated patients with serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary and a perspective study pertaining to 99 patients with ovarian malignant tumors of different histotypes enabled detecting metastases in the greater omentum in 73.9% and 63.6% of cases accordingly. An intensity of metastatic dissemination was dependent on stage, the presence of exudates in the abdominal and pleural cavities but was independent on patients' age. High incidence of metastatic involvement of the omentum, the recognition of micrometastases, detected only histologically in 15.9% of patients, allowed a recommendation to be substantiated for the mandatory removal of the greater omentum at all clinical stages of ovarian cancer.
