          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract The reasons for procrastination in activities related to the writing of dissertations or thesis is relevant to reflect on whether procrastination contributes negatively to achieving academic goals. The aim of this work was to verify the intensity of reasons for procrastination in activities related to the elaboration of dissertations or theses among Brazilian students who are studying stricto sensu postgraduate courses in the business area. The instrument used in this study links the reasons for academic procrastination with fear of success and fear of failure. The sample analyzed the answers of 288 Brazilian students from the business area. Descriptive analyzes and between-group difference tests were performed. The results show that the certainty of being successful in carrying out the tasks was the reason with the greatest intensity of procrastination during the preparation of dissertations or theses; accounting students present a greater intensity of motives compared to economics students. The study shows that academic procrastination seems to be a dynamic behavior and is related to moments of solitude during which students need to dedicate themselves to write dissertations or theses.

The need to belong: desire for interpersonal attachments as a fundamental human motivation.

A hypothesized need to form and maintain strong, stable interpersonal relationships is evaluated in light of the empirical literature. The need is for frequent, nonaversive interactions within an ongoing relational bond. Consistent with the belongingness hypothesis, people form social attachments readily under most conditions and resist the dissolution of existing bonds. Belongingness appears to have multiple and strong effects on emotional patterns and on cognitive processes. Lack of attachments is linked to a variety of ill effects on health, adjustment, and well-being. Other evidence, such as that concerning satiation, substitution, and behavioral consequences, is likewise consistent with the hypothesized motivation. Several seeming counterexamples turned out not to disconfirm the hypothesis. Existing evidence supports the hypothesis that the need to belong is a powerful, fundamental, and extremely pervasive motivation.

The nature of procrastination: a meta-analytic and theoretical review of quintessential self-regulatory failure.

Procrastination is a prevalent and pernicious form of self-regulatory failure that is not entirely understood. Hence, the relevant conceptual, theoretical, and empirical work is reviewed, drawing upon correlational, experimental, and qualitative findings. A meta-analysis of procrastination's possible causes and effects, based on 691 correlations, reveals that neuroticism, rebelliousness, and sensation seeking show only a weak connection. Strong and consistent predictors of procrastination were task aversiveness, task delay, self-efficacy, and impulsiveness, as well as conscientiousness and its facets of self-control, distractibility, organization, and achievement motivation. These effects prove consistent with temporal motivation theory, an integrative hybrid of expectancy theory and hyperbolic discounting. Continued research into procrastination should not be delayed, especially because its prevalence appears to be growing. (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved.
