Abstract

RESUMEN En este artículo propongo que la relación de las élites agrarias con los paramilitares fue más compleja de lo que se cree. Así como hubo sectores que se articularon profunda y masivamente a la experiencia paramilitar, también hubo otros que se abstuvieron o se mantuvieron relativamente al margen. Tomando como caso de estudio el sector cafetero del Departamento del Magdalena, muestro que la participación directa de sus élites en el fenómeno paramilitar fue muy limitada, casi nula. Argumento que esto se puede entender a partir de su relación con la conflictividad agraria y con la violencia guerrillera.

ABSTRACT In this article, I propose that the relationship of rural elites with the paramilitaries was more complex than is commonly thought. Although there were sectors that were deeply and massively involved in the paramilitary experience, there were also others that abstained or remained relatively uninvolved. Taking as a case study the coffee region of the department of Magdalena, I show that the direct participation of its elites in the paramilitary phenomenon was very limited, almost null. I argue that this can be understood considering their relationship with the agrarian conflict and guerrilla violence.
