      First natural infection by Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa Ransom (Digenea, Heterophyidae) in an avian host, Ardea cocoi Linnaeus (Aves, Ciconiiformes, Ardeidae) in Brazil

          Abstract

          The first case of a natural avian infection caused by the digenetic trematode Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa Ransom, 1920 in Brazil, is reported from the ardeid bird Ardea cocoi Linnaeus, 1766. This represents a new host record and data on clinical and pathological findings are also reported.

          Human infection by Phagicola sp. (Trematoda, Heterophyidae) in the municipality of Registro, São Paulo State, Brazil.

          In 1988, nine cases of human parasitism by Phagicola sp. were diagnosed in the municipality of Registro (São Paulo State, Brazil) by stool examinations, in patients who ate raw mullet (Mugil sp.). Six (66%) of the nine patients suffered from flatulence and four (44%) had diarrhoeal episodes; six (66%) showed slight eosinophilia. On the same occasion, 61 dogs and 11 cats from Registro were also submitted to stool examination. Only one dog (1.6%) showed Phagicola eggs in the stool. All patients were treated with a single dose of praziquantel (50 mg kg-1 body weight) and control stool tests performed on the 15th, 30th and 60th days post-treatment showed no trematode eggs.

            Human parasitism by Phagicola sp (Trematoda, Heterophyidae) in Cananéia, São Paulo State, Brazil

            We report one case of parasitism by Phagicola sp. (Trematoda, Heterophyidae) in a 31 years-old woman who, in 1987, travelled and stayed several months in the municipality of Cananéia (SP), where she ingested, in various occasions, raw mullet (Mugil sp.). The patient refered mild intestinal pain and laboratory examinations showed eggs of Phagicola sp. in the stools and a slight increase in eosinophil blood levels (8%). After treatment with praziquantel (75 mg/kg per day for three days) all the symptoms and signs disappeared. This is, certainly, the first record of human infection by Phagicola sp. in Brazil and, perhaps, in countries other than the U.S.A. where unclear references to a few human cases were reported in the South-eastern region.

              Taxonomic study of Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa Ransom, 1920 (Digenea: Heterophyidae) and related taxa.

              Species of Ascocotyle Looss, 1899 (subgenus Phagicola Faust, 1920) (Digenea: Heterophyidae) related to A. (P.) longa Ransom, 1920, i.e. those with a bipartite gonotyl and a single crown of 16 circumoral spines, were revised on the basis of examination of type and voucher specimens. The species A. (P.) arnaldoi Travassos, 1929, A. (P.) byrdi (Robinson, 1956) and A. (P.) longicollis (Kuntz & Chandler, 1956), all possessing 16 circumoral spines, are synonymised with A. (P.) longa. A. (P.) ascolonga Witenberg, 1929, the types of which were not available, is provisionally retained as a valid species despite its close similarity to A. (P.) longa (identical number of circumoral spines and morphology of the ventrogenital sac). It differs from A. (P.) longa in the presence of uterine loops posterior to the testes and intestinal caeca ending anterior to the ovary (versus the pretesticular uterus and intestinal caeca reaching to the posterior margin of the ovary in A. (P.) longa). A. (P.) inglei (Hutton & Sogandares-Bernal, 1959), found only once in a single specimen, is also tentatively considered a valid species because it differs in number of circumoral spines (19), slightly larger eggs (23-26 x 13-16 microns) and the distribution of refractile bodies of the gonotyl arranged in four separate groups from A. (P.) longa and A. (P.) ascolonga (16 circumoral spines; eggs 15-20 x 8-12 microns; refractile bodies in two groups).
