Globalisation has had a major impact on society, economics and health. Scientific research and innovation must capitalise on the mutual benefits incurred through the sharing of knowledge and resources to address the scientific and health-related questions pertinent on a local and global basis. As a result, the marketplace for innovation and research has become much bigger, opening up both competition and opportunities. 'Prestige and competition are better provided through partnerships between countries than by individual countries standing alone,' observes Ed Whiting, Director of Policy and Chief of Staff at the Wellcome Trust, UK.
