      Larvicidal Activity of essential oils from Brazilian plants against Aedes aegypti L.

          Abstract

          Aedes aegypti L. is the major vector of dengue fever, an endemic disease in Brazil. In an effort to find effective and affordable ways to control this mosquito, the larvicidal activities of essential oils from nine plants widely found in the Northeast of Brazil were analyzed by measurement of their LC50. The essential oils were extracted by steam distillation and their chemical composition determined by GL-chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy. The essential oils from Cymbopogon citratus and Lippia sidoides, reported in the literature to have larvicidal properties against A. aegypti, were used for activity comparison. The results show that Ocimum americanum and Ocimum gratissimum have LC50 of 67 ppm and 60 ppm respectively, compared to 63 ppm for L. sidoides and 69 ppm for C. citratus. These results suggest a potential utilization of the essential oil of these two Ocimum species for the control of A. aegypti.

            Dengue

            El dengue es hoy la más importante arbovirosis, por su gran carga de enfermedad e implicaciones sociales. El mosquito Aedes aegypti, su principal transmisor convive con el hombre en su hábitat domestico y peridoméstico. El cuadro clínico es de fiebre, cefalea, dolor retroocular, dolores corporales, exantema y mucho decaimiento. El enfermo puede empeorar súbitamente y presentar choque por dengue, con grandes hemorragias digestivas y elevada mortalidad. No existe droga antiviral, pero la muerte puede evitarse mediante la infusión intravenosa precoz de soluciones cristaloides. Algunos candidatos vacunales están actualmente en ensayo clínico. La prevención depende del control del vector, mediante educación sanitaria y reordenamiento ambiental.

              Repellency of essential oils to mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

              The repellency of different concentrations (5, 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) and combinations of 5 essential oils (Bourbon geranium, cedarwood, clove, peppermint, and thyme) to Aedes aegypti (L.) and Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann when applied to human skin was determined in laboratory tests. Cedarwood oil failed to repel mosquitoes and only high concentrations of peppermint oil repelled Ae. aegypti. None of the oils tested prevented mosquito bite when used at the 5 or 10% concentration. Thyme and clove oils were the most effective mosquito repellents and provided 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 h of protection, depending on oil concentration. Clove oil (50%) combined with geranium oil (50%) or with thyme oil (50%) prevented biting by An. albimanus for 1 1/4 to 2 1/2 h. The potential for using essential oils as topical mosquito repellents may be limited by user acceptability; clove, thyme, and peppermint oils can be irritating to the skin, whereas both human subjects in this study judged the odor of clove and thyme oils unacceptable at concentrations > or = 25%.
