          Abstract

The control of lens fibre formation and the proportions of crystalline obtained in normal and transdifferentiating systems suggest a hypothesis of a hierarchy of four levels of regulation. The last two include the directive role of conditions of culture, and the modulatory role of cell cycle duration. Some factors affecting δ-crystallin levels are described.
