Abstract

Tomando testimonios documentales producidos por el Cabildo de la Villa de Medellín en el ejercicio de sus funciones, como institución colonial dependiente de la Nueva Granada, y como modelo de funcionamiento del resto de cabildos coloniales, ofrecemos algunas muestras del poder simbólico que la ley ostentaba, bien bajo la forma de tipologías documentales aisladas como Reales Provisiones o Reales Cédulas, o bien bajo su compilación impresa a través de los cuatro o tres tomos que conformaban la Recopilación de las Leyes de Indias de 1680 que, por ley, debía ser custodiada dentro del "arca triclave" del cabildo.

Translated abstract

From written depositions taken for the Cabildo of the City of Medellín, in the exercise of its functions as a dependent colonial institution of New Granada, and as a model of how other colonial cabildos operated, we offer evidence of the symbolic power wielded by the law, either through typologies of different kinds of documents, such as the Reales Provisiones or Reales Cedulas, or through published compilations in the three or four volumes comprising the Recopilación de las Leyes de Indias of 1680 that, by law, had to be safeguarded in the "arca triclave" of the cabildo.
