Abstract

O contexto deste artigo situa-se no Oceano Índico. Trata-se de Mascarenhas, um arquipélago constituído por três ilhas: Reunião (departamento francês de além-mar), Maurício (Estado soberano) e Rodrigues (ilha com estatuto de região autônoma da Ilha Maurício). É possível identificar, nessas três ilhas, um tronco comum de comportamentos culturais associados ao nascimento e à primeira infância. Que costumes são esses? Como se modificam, por influência da sociedade ocidental contemporânea? Colocar-se-á, igualmente, a questão da interpretação dos dados de pesquisa numa sociedade crioula de origens pluriculturais em evolução extremamente veloz. Quais as armadilhas da interpretação? Como se constrói a tradição?

The Mascarene archipelago in the Indian Ocean consists of three islands: Reunion (Overseas French Department), Mauritius (sovereign) and Rodrigues (island with the status of an autonomous region of Mauritius). On the three islands, it is possible to identify a common core of cultural behavior associated with birth and childhood. What are these costumes? How do they change under the influence of contemporary Western society? The question of how to interpret fieldwork data obtained in a multicultural Creole society that evolves extremely fast is also discussed. What are the pitfalls of interpretation? How is tradition built?
