          Abstract

          Se realizó la evaluación económica de dos procesos continuos de producción de biodiesel a partir de aceite crudo palma. Se calcularon los costos de capital, operativos y de manufactura para ambos procesos. Como criterios de evaluación económica se utilizaron la tasa interna de retorno (TIR) y el valor presente neto (VPN). Se efectuó un análisis de sensibilidad para estudiar el efecto de los precios de las materias primas y los productos sobre la rentabilidad. Ambos procesos requieren una inversión de capital fijo del orden de 2 millones de dólares (± 25%) y un costo total de manufactura de 2.2 dólares/galón. El proceso con neutralización previa de los ácidos grasos libres presentó una mayor rentabilidad en todos los escenarios evaluados.

          Translated abstract

          The economical assessment of two continuous processes for biodiesel production from crude palm oil was carried out. The capital, operative and manufacturing costs were calculated for both processes. As profitability evaluation criteria, the discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) and the net present value (NPV) were used. A price sensitivity analysis was performed. Both processes require a capital cost of 2 million dollars (± 25%) and a total manufacturing cost of 2.2 dollars/gallon. The process with previous neutralization of the free fatty acids showed a greater profitability in all the economic scenarios evaluated.

          Biodiesel production from waste cooking oil: 2. Economic assessment and sensitivity analysis.

          The economic feasibilities of four continuous processes to produce biodiesel, including both alkali- and acid-catalyzed processes, using waste cooking oil and the 'standard' process using virgin vegetable oil as the raw material, were assessed. Although the alkali-catalyzed process using virgin vegetable oil had the lowest fixed capital cost, the acid-catalyzed process using waste cooking oil was more economically feasible overall, providing a lower total manufacturing cost, a more attractive after-tax rate of return and a lower biodiesel break-even price. On the basis of these economic calculations, sensitivity analyses for these processes were carried out. Plant capacity and prices of feedstock oils and biodiesel were found to be the most significant factors affecting the economic viability of biodiesel manufacture.
