In September 2011, all charges against 13 of the “Urewera 18” were dropped following a Supreme Court's ruling that most evidence was inadmissible. Of the five remaining defendants, one passed away, and four were convicted of firearms charges in May 2012, but found not guilty of the more serious charge of belonging to an organized criminal group. Two were sentenced to 2.5 years in prison but have since been released on parole and two others were sentenced to home detention. On 23 April 2013, the “Urewera Four” lost their application to appeal to the High Court on the grounds that they had not suffered a “substantial miscarriage of justice” (Gay 2013).
