This paper presents an approach to combine the World Wide Web and database systems in a way that all of the Web based resources like documents, images, audio or video clips as well as Java applets are stored and managed by the database system. Access to the information located in the database system is based on an URL notation which is independent of the underlying database environment will be described in detail. Addionally, the database system is used to store all of the necessary meta data that is used to overcome the most serious limitations of the World Wide Web like the existence of the “lost in hyperspace” syndrome, dangling links as well as the limited search facilities and by this means “enhance the functionality of the Web”.
