Promoting growth mindset and resilience through Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) could be beneficial for young unemployed adults, as many have weak beliefs in their capacity to learn, and job-search adversity could reinforce a poor self-image. Using digital platforms for delivering such PPIs has been recommended, however, unsatisfying user experiences and disinterest from users cause low retentions. Our research objective was to design and develop a specific digital intervention, where formative usability testing was used to explore how a self-administered intervention might cater to users’ needs and preferences. Involving end-users enabled relatable content development, resolved user experience problems, and confirmed a need for increasing user motivation. As such it had direct implications for the user experience design. Furthermore, our study suggests that designing from past evidence-based interventions may threaten user experience and needed interactivity.
