The purpose of this research is to compare performance results and participation percentages in class C Wisconsin State Music Association solo / ensemble festival for middle school string orchestra students who have access to video tutorials of the pieces to the same population’s results in previous years. There will be a mixed-methods approach to determine the suitability of maintaining this “flipped classroom” approach, as attitudes towards participation will be measured through a survey of both students and their parents. The current state of research on flipped classrooms outside of the performing arts is that it allows students to probe topics more deeply with teachers, leaving the lecture portion of lessons for homework.
