The growth and homogenization of Democracy, which could be referred to as the globalization of Democracy, are fast increasing. Developing countries such as Nigeria practice a liberal democracy to promote the development and well-being of the people within a framework of justice and freedom. Election stands to be one post-colonial vital tool in a democratic project that encompasses several candidates representing political parties and cum the electorates, in which voting is very consequential in making decisions or selection of leaders/government to express the interest of a larger population of the people by holding a public office in a competitive struggle. Elections provide opportunities for the advancement of Democracy, encourage political liberalization, and foster political development participation. Since independence till date, several general elections have been held and characterized by one form of violence or the other, which have given rise to election rigging malpractices that result in unfree and unfair election outcomes; these have impeded the sole aim of democratization in Nigeria. In most cases, the ferocities have hampered the dream and aspirations of the people for good governance. The researcher evaluated the subject, and the work reviewed strands of literature to ascertain the causes and consequences of election violence in Nigeria’s contemporary democratic epoch; conclusions were drawn from the findings from the study and proffered measures on best to curb the issue.
