The number of persons suffering from dementia is increasing rapidly in most parts of the world due to increased life expectancy. Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that still carries a stigma. The fear of being excluded from the social network and community, the fear of an advanced disease, the fear of the burden of caring for a family member with dementia. The research methods used in the paper were a systematic review of the literature and a review of examples of good practice. Many social innovations aim to improve the situation of persons with dementia and their relatives in the role of informal caregivers. Various projects and initiatives are being set up to expand intergenerational collaboration and increase the involvement of persons with dementia in the local community, thus positively impacting the quality of life of persons with dementia and their families. Despite the sincere intention to create a friendly environment for persons with dementia, we may use the wrong terminology to reinforce the stigma and focus on the disease - dementia - rather than the person with dementia. This also happens with the creation of the term "dementia friendly initiatives", where with a little thought we realize that the term itself, although understandable, discriminates against persons with dementia.
