Ismar Schorsch is Rabbi Herman Abramovitz Professor of Jewish History and chancellor
emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Ordained by JTS in 1962, he holds master’s
degrees from JTS and Columbia University, and was awarded a PhD in Jewish History
by Columbia in 1969. He served for twenty years as chancellor of JTS. An expert on
the history of the
Wissenschaft des Judentums, his most recent publication is an intellectual biography of the movement’s founding
Leopold Zunz: Creativity in Adversity (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016).
