            Abstract

The article questions whether free market capitalism can provide a basis for human prosperity. It argues that the two fundamental contradictions of the current formulation of capitalism generate an inherently paradoxical system that is bound to encounter ever more damaging crises. The determination of plutocrats to suppress any serious consideration of these weaknesses is indicative of the presence of a double bind which precludes the establishment of a more viable basis for human interactions and development. Finally, responses are briefly suggested that are incremental rather than revolutionary.
