Background : TMJ ankylosis is hypomobility to immobility of the joint that can lead to inability to open the mouth. It affects the dento-facial growth if occurred in childhood. Trauma especially during birth can be a major cause of TMJ ankylosis of children. In Bangladesh ankylosis due to fall or birth trauma is very high.
Report of a case: Here TMJ ankylosis of the right side of a 13 year old boy with likely fibro osseous ankylosis with type I sawhney classification is presented. Under proper aseptic precaution, a pre-auricular incision with Al-Kayat and Bramely modification was given on the right side, along with the removal of fibrous part and condyle of the joint. Gap arthroplasty along coronoidectomy was carried out with increased peroperative mouth opening.
Conclusion: The presented case is a childhood TMJ ankylosis of a 13 year old boy. The aetiology, classifications, timing and choice of surgical techniques along with its considerations and complications are studied. Close follow-up are advocated and post-operative care is given for successful treatment.
