            Abstract

This article elucidates the different parameters used in the study of beaches along the Konkan coast to identify biodiversity hotspots. The author has identified these parameters after an extensive study and analysis of not only the flora and fauna but also the extent and severity of human activity which often has a detrimental impact on biodiversity.

Beaches have been ranked on the basis of dune vegetation, protective vegetation, algal cover, Eagle & Turtle nesting and marine animals. Another table examines the presence of supportive parameters like Exposed/Sheltered beaches, Intertidal zone, presence of stream/estuary, mangroves, forests and human activity. The highest scores based on these two tables are used to identify the biodiversity hotspots. The author has also briefly discussed people’s participation in nature conservation and public awareness and networking.
