In 2001, a two-day workshop was organized in Lonawala near Pune, Maharashtra State, under the initiation of Swiss Development Corporation (SDC India), Swiss Consultants (SKAT), and Development Alternatives (DA Delhi), with an aim to develop a standardized methodology for measuring the sustainability of a building. Twenty stakeholders, including architects, structural engineers, policy makers from the government, businessmen, investors, and bankers connected with the building industry participated in the workshop. The workshop consisted of five modules and three categories of indicators, including ecological, financial, and social indicators. The workshop discussed relevant topics like lower building and maintenance costs, simplicity in building maintenance, healthy interiors and environment, recycling of materials, embodied energy, life cycle analysis, and maintaining biodiversity in the surroundings. The workshop analyzed three existing buildings of different nature, including a residential apartment in an urban area and a residence in a rural setting.
