UN NUEVO GÉNERO DE LA FAMILIA NEOTROPICAL MARCGRAVIACEAE (ERICALES) Y CIRCUNSCRIPCIÓN DEL COMPLEJO NORANTEA Translated title: A new genus of the Neotropical family Marcgraviaceae (Ericales) and circumscription of the Norantea Complex

Abstract

La familia Marcgraviaceae es de distribución neotropical y consta de unas 110-130 especies. Al interior de esta familia existe el complejo Norantea, el cual presenta una gran variación morfológica (e.g. estructura de la inflorescencia, morfología y disposición diferencial de los nectarios reproductivos, morfología polínica), y por esta razón, este taxón ha sido dividido recientemente en cuatro géneros: Marcgraviastrum, Norantea sensu stricto, Sarcopera y Schwartzia. No obstante, esta delimitación no satisface la ubicación de dos especies, las cuales exhiben características peculiares de varios géneros, por lo que su asignación a sus respectivos géneros es ambigua en la actualidad (Sarcopera oxystylis y Schwartzia diaz-piedrahitae). Las características distintivas observadas en estas dos especies se concentran en la estructura de sus inflorescencias, y la forma de éstas determina y delimita los géneros en las Marcgraviaceae. Por tal razón, propongo un nuevo género para obviar la ambiegüedad en la ubicación taxonómica de las dos especies mencionadas. Asimismo, presento las combinaciones respectivas, las descripciones de las dos especies, sus ilustraciones, sus sinónimos y su distribución geográfica y ecológica. Por último, presento un panorama de la nueva circunscripción del complejo Norantea, al que pertenece el nuevo género propuesto.

Translated abstract

The Marcgraviaceae is a Neotropical family with 110-130 species. Norantea Complex within the family, is the shows a very diverse morphology (e.g. inflorescence structure, morphology and disposition of nectariferous bracts, as well as the pollen morphology), and for this reason, this genus has been divided into Marcgraviastrum, Norantea sensu stricto, Sarcopera, and Schwartzia. However, this delimitation doesn’t satisfy the correct ubication for two species, Sarcopera oxystylis and Schwartzia diaz-piedrahitae, because they show singular and mixed features of various genera. The peculiar characteristics of these species are concentrated in the inflorescence structure, and this structure defines the generic arrangement in Marcgraviaceae. Therefore, I propose a new genus in order to avoid the ambiguity in the taxonomic ubication of Sarcopera oxystylis and Schwartzia diaz-piedrahitae. In addition, I present the respective combinations, the species descriptions, as well as their illustrations, synonyms, and geographic and ecological distributions. Finally, I show an overview on the new circumscription for the Norantea Complex.
